Summary
The purpose of this study, is to study the use of the methods of psychodrama in theatre education, and gauge the ability of prospective actors management of their emotions.
This thesis study has been conducted with undergraduate students of Theatre Department in the Fine Arts Faculty of private university. Group members were taken into the group on a voluntary basis. Volunteers who stated that they could not participate regularly were excluded from the study. The group started with 12 students. The group process ended with four female(44.6%), 2 male (33.3%) students.
Group work was carried out in a private counselling centre founded by the writer. The group came together on the same day and time each week for 180 minutes. When the number of sessions reached 16 (6 months), the group process was terminated. Group sessions were completed under supervision by a single administrator.
The purpose of the thesis and information about the process was given in the first session and the Emotion Management Skills Scale (EMSS) was applied with permission from the author. The final test was carried out after the last session.
Two stages – quantitative and qualitative analysis, of the data collected was carried out. Emotion Management Skills Scale (DYBÖ) responses were transferred to and statistically analyzed by SPSS 20. Group sessions qualitative analysis was conducted by researchers under the guidance of supervisors.
The quantitative findings were that the different between the scores of the first test and final test of the is not statistically significant (p = 0.463). However, qualitative findings indicate that members of the group showed changes in the levels of insight and emotional awareness.
As a result, it has been concluded that psychodrama group practices can be influential in the increase in the ability to manage emotions in prospective actors.
