Author: Hasi SaĞin
Summary
This work is a graduate thesis of group therapy training. A 16-week of psychodrama group process has been conducted to a heterogenous group. This dissertation is an evaluation of the benefits gained by members and related psychodrama elements via a qualitative research methodology.
The research group included 7 females and 4 males. For quantitative evaluations, we used the helpful aspects Likert scores from the Helpful Aspects of Therapy (HAT) Form and Trait Anxiety Scores from the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) Form TX-2. As qualitative data, group members’ feedbacks on helpful aspects of therapy obtained from HAT forms were used. Expression and word analysis were applied to qualitative data. The results are reported along with each member’s personal process evaluation.
There was a decrease in scores of Trait Anxiety Inventory in 9 members and an increase in 3 members. The overall mean changes in scores at the end of the therapy was not statistically significant.
It was notable that the helpful aspect score was in increasing trend during the therapy process.
Expression analysis from the HAT forms indicated that the mostly cited helpful codes were ‘awareness’, ‘warming up the new process’, ‘gaining understanding’, ‘getting a lesson’.
In conclusion, data anlaysis and personal self-evaluations of the group members showed the benefits that psychodrama brings to people. We believe that qualitative data analysis is an appropriate method to evaluate psychodramatic group therapy process.
